Items to Splurge on for Your Wedding

Although every wedding is unique to the bride and groom, there are usually a few key details that will remain the same. Most of the time these are the items you should splurge on instead of trying get the most bang for your buck.

The Music

I cannot stress this one enough. My husband and I tried to save costs by hiring a cheaper DJ instead of spending a little bit of extra money. Let’s just say it was one of those wedding horror stories. He announced the wedding party at the reception in the wrong order, even though we had gone over it seconds before. He played the wrong version of the song for our first dance, so that’s the only thing we can remember of what was supposed to be a special moment. We asked him to play jazz music during the dinner and instead he played his own “dinner playlist” that had songs like “Hot in Here” by Usher. Definitely not what we wanted to be playing in front of our grandparents. He opened up our bar too early, so no one ever ate the cake really. If there’s one thing we regret, it’s not spending that extra little bit of money on a live band.

The Food

One thing that our guests STILL talk about is how amazing our food was! Personally I can’t recall much of it because I was still so nervous, but I do remember the rolls and green bean casserole were on point! We still get asked a lot who did our catering and if they can get the recipe for the poppy seed chicken.

Hair and Makeup

You may be able to create the best curls and up-dos for yourself and beat your face to beauty guru status, but do you want to spend all of your time doing it for yourself and bridesmaids? I didn’t trust myself with doing everyone’s makeup, but thankfully we have a family friend that I wanted to hire to do all of our makeup. She said she would do it for free as a wedding gift. Even if we were going to have to pay I would have spent the money because she is so good. I wish we had spent a bit more on hair, though, because even before I stepped foot outside, my hair was falling down and the girl had ducked out. There was no way for me to touch up my fallen curls, so I just had to go for a wavy look.

For the love of all weddings, this is one thing you should not try to be stingy with, but also don’t pay $5,000 for one. Our photographer had done my senior pictures (which I loved) so we obviously wanted her again. This time she had two assistants, her husband and a friend of theirs. Our photos turned out AMAZING. We have so many candid photos of guests, beautiful portraits with our families, and photos of our venue itself. We still are in love with all of our photos months after we got them and we don’t regret for one minute paying the price we did.

A Special Surprise for Your Guests

This could be one of a few different things. For us, it was an open bar and a cigar bar. When the bar was opened, all of our guests (mostly college aged) literally rushed to the bar. When our guests found out we had a cigar bar, they rushed to that too. The cigar bar is something or guests still talk about. It was a great opportunity for our photographers to get some candid photos as well. We had a lot of cigars left over, but my husband still smokes them and gave many to friends as gifts over the course of a few months.

Like I said before, your wedding is going to be just as unique as you are. Put your personal spin on everything because no matter what, it’s your day and your guests will love everything!
