So now that we’re reaching the point in the semester where spring recruitments have pretty much come to an end at most schools, it’s time to start thinking about another super fun part of sorority life- getting a little. Just briefly, for anyone who does not know, “little” is short for little sister. If you’re in a sorority you get a little sister and act as a friend and mentor. Most sororities have the tradition of the bigs getting their littles gifts. Sometimes it can be difficult to decide what exactly to get your little because there are so many options and you want to give her the best of the best. I personally believe some thoughtful and personal gifts are the best. So I wanted to share a few gift ideas that might just be the perfect thing to get your little!

Encouragement Jar

This is a super simple project and one I think any girl would love to receive. Basically, you decorate a mason jar however you’d like (paint, glitter, ribbons etc.) and fill it with popsicle sticks that you’ve written on. It can be something like an encouraging quote, a bible verse, or a simple encouraging message like “your big loves you.” Then if your little is ever feeling down or having a bad day, she can pull one of the sticks out for a little encouragement or comfort.

“Open When” letter set

This is kind of similar to the first idea and also very simple yet sweet. You just simply write a series of letters to your little and label the envelopes “Open when…” You can choose to label them with any situation. For example, “Open when you’re feeling down”, “Open when it’s your birthday”, or “Open when you’re stressing over finals.” Then your little can sit and read a letter from you every so often.

Hand painted pin box

Most sororities have pins for the members to wear. My sorority even has one for the candidate process and another for active sisters. These pins are very important to membership and cannot be lost. Therefore, your little will need a place for their pin (or pins). A hand painted pin box is a great way to make your little feel loved because you took the time to make it yourself and it’s practical. You can find wooden boxes at craft stores for pretty cheap. Then you just need some paint and I’d suggest a little felt in the bottom of the box.

Her favorite food or drinks

We all love receiving our favorite snack food or soda. So including your littles favorites with the other gifts you get her is a simple way to be thoughtful and make her feel loved. A lot of sororities will have girls fill out forms where they can write down all of their favorite items so it’s very easy to know these things about your little, but if your sorority doesn’t do something like that, use her social media or other friends to find out what she likes to eat and drink!

A hand painted frame for her to put a picture of the both of you

After your little finds out who you are, I’m sure she’s going to want to take tons of pictures with you! I think making a frame for her to display her favorite picture in her dorm or at home is a perfect gift idea. It’s something totally customized to her likes and you can have a picture of you both from reveal to go in later! This is a gift idea you see really often, but I think it’s still super fun and thoughtful.
Big/ Little can be one of the most exciting parts of being in a sorority and choosing gifts to give your little becomes very important. Thoughtful gifts always make the best gifts so I know all these ideas are things any little will love. Just remember, as long as it comes from the heart you can’t go wrong!
